Notes
Avena sativa (Milky Oat Seed & Straw)is a gentle herb used to "feed" the nervous system when it has been weakened, exhausted, or overdrawn. This herb is also helpful for weaning off of addictive substances such as alcohol, caffeine, opiates, and tobacco. A small, placebo-controlled trial showed that 12 out of 13 smokers who took a tincture of Avena sativa daily for one month either quit smoking or cut their cigarette use by more than half (1). Recent research shows it to be beneficial on cognitive performance, attention, and task performance despite tiredness (2-3). Preclinical studies suggest it can hasten the healing time of nerves if they become damaged (4).
Glycyrrhiza glabra (Licorice) is regarded as one of the most important and beneficial herbs in the world; it is used in various modern and historic herbal traditions. It has anti-inflammatory, anti-viral, demulcent, liver protective, and adpatogenic actions. It aids in insulin sensitivity, clearing away free radicals, correcting lipid and protein metabolic disorders, and improving microcirculation (5-6). Due in part to its effect on cortisol, Glycyrrhiza is a key herb when adrenal output is low or when the adrenal glands need extra supportβa common reality in today's fast-paced society (7). In Traditional Chinese Medicine, licorice is added to most formulas in order to enhance herbal synergy. It harmonizes and balances the actions and energetics of the other herbs.
Bacopa monnieri (Brahmi) is a nootropic herb traditionally used in Ayurvedic medicine to improve mental health and to sharpen the mind and the intellect. It is thought to enhance memory and concentration while also calming the heart and mind. It also aids in stopping addictions and bad habits. Cell studies suggest that it has direct anti-inflammatory effects within the brain. Its anxiety-reducing effects have been studied in mice to be comparable to Lorazepam, a common benzodiazapene used to treat anxiety. Human clinical trials have confirmed Bacopa's ability to improve working memory, attention, learning rate, information processing, executive functioning and a variety of other cognitive outcomes.
Silybum marianum (Milk Thistle) has liver protective and kidney protective actions. It can help improve blood sugar and blood lipid markers. The Silymarin in Milk Thistle is a strong antioxidant. It can stabilize cell membranes against the damaging effects of free radicals, especially in the liver, as can happen during normal liver detoxification processes. It is included in our formula for its ability to restore the liver when eating, drinking, or acetaminophen use has taken its toll.
Scutellaria lateriflora (Skullcap) helps to calm and tonify the nervous system. It may reduce the physical effects of fearfulness, agitation, and anxiety by relaxing smooth muscles (IBS, asthma, headaches) and skeletal muscles (spasms, tremors, coughs). It is helpful for feelings of irritation that can cause restlessness, palpitations, and insomnia. It has also been used to ease withdrawal from tranquilizers or sleeping pills. Scutellaria works both in the short term and long term.
Matricaria chamomilla (Chamomile) is a relaxing, anti-anxiety, and inflammation modulating herb that supports the nervous system in its normal functioning. It is also a smooth muscle relaxer and can therefore help the digestive system with nervous tension, dyspepsia (stomach aches), and irritable bowel syndrome. Clinical trials have shown it to be effective for PMS, painful periods, reducing menstrual bleeding, improving sleep quality, easing anxiety, improving depression, and reducing hypertension.
Eleutherococcus senticosus (Eleuthero) is an adaptogen and immune modulator. It was well researched in the USSR from 1962-1986 during which time 26 placebo-controlled trials were published but kept inaccessible to the public until recently. Results showed that this herb improved cognitive function, physical and mental endurance, and could be taken prophylactically to avoid respiratory infections. Those taking Eleuthero have reported a sense of well-being and deeper restorative sleep.
